As fashion designer Prabal Gurung prepares his last pieces for the season, he also shows off his first cosmetics line – the initial step in building his namesake beauty business.
Born in Singapore and raised in Nepal, 35-year-old Gurung can still remember his mother’s cosmetics case in his early years, and talks fondly of saving her compacts after she’d finished with them.
My love of fashion and beauty began when I was a kid. It was my comfort, my escape. I didn’t know the beauty brands or the big designers when I was really young, but I was fascinated by the packaging and the beautiful boxes. It was almost magical. I’d see my mom come home from work and put on all this make up and it would be a total transformation happening, and [I saw] the confidence that came with that.

A collaboration with the ever-happy to oblige MAC Cosmetics, Prabal Gurung’s 14-piece collection will launch on November 26 in MAC stores in the U.S. – and in December in all of the brand’s international stores (except China).
All those in attendance of the designer’s SS15 show on September 6 will also get an exclusive preview.
