Located deep in the heart of Amsterdam’s museum district, the musical past of the Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam is still audible, and visible. Intrigued by its architecture and history, Milan-based star architect Piero Lissoni created a hybrid of modern heritage for the hotel, boasting an intriguing contrast of Neo-Gothic Dutch architecture and Italian design. The original lofty ceilings have been left intact in almost half of the 129 rooms, and transformed into stunning duplexes with large windows and exposed structural beams. A particularly spectacular element is the courtyard covered entirely in glass, creating a wonderful contrast between the old and the new, the classic and the modern.

Marking the 125th anniversary of the death of Van Gogh, the Van Gogh Europe Foundation is also seizing the opportunity to honour the Dutch artist with programmes such as exhibitions, cycle routes and art events. The activities will take place in the various locations where Van Gogh lived and worked during his life, and also in museums where his works are preserved, examined and displayed. The common theme that has been chosen is ‘125 years of inspiration’ and the idea behind this is that the artist continues to inspire many people up till today.

The Van Gogh Europe Foundation, or ‘Stichting Van Gogh Europe’, was established in January 2013 by the Van Gogh Museum, the Kröller-Müller Museum and Van Gogh Brabant with the aim of making Van Gogh’s heritage jointly accessible to everyone. These organisations, together with Mons 2015, form a collaboration under the name Van Gogh Europe comprising around 30 institutions that actively preserve Van Gogh’s heritage in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England.

Axel Rüger, general director of Van Gogh Museum, said: “Van Gogh enthusiasts around the world are interested in his art, but also in his life. By working together with the various Van Gogh locations, we can make his life tangible. This cooperation creates a valuable extra dimension.”
