First Kiss

Heart-Love-by-Hands

Global Love Day (GLD) is an annual celebration of humanity which is celebrated in countries and communities around the world each May 1. The Love Foundation, the nonprofit organization whose mission it is to “Inspire people to love unconditionally” presents the international event as a symbolic day of unconditional love. Global Love Day’s main theme, “Love begins with me,” has been the focus since its inception.

The six tenets of Global Love Day are:

We are one humanity on this planet.
All life is interconnected and interdependent.

All share in the Universal bond of love.
Love begins with self acceptance and forgiveness.

With respect and compassion we embrace diversity.
Together we make a difference through love.

In recent years, Global Love Day has additionally been celebrated in the virtual world of Second Life. Since 2010, the virtual event is held in a specially created sim and includes a full day of dancing, meditating and other activities. In 2011, it was reported that over 800 avatars from around the world attended Global Love Day in Second Life.

Idan Bitton and Alfredo Calle Ferran First Kiss

In honor of Global Love Day, The Love Foundation also hosts an annual Art, Essay and Poetry Invitational where people of all ages can share their creative expression of global love. Submissions reflect the universal understanding of love, unity, tolerance, compassion and represent the idea of Global Love Day along with its theme ‘Love begins with me’.

Alfredo Calle Ferran made the movie First Kiss. First Kiss is a 84 minute kiss video between the artists Idan Bitton and Alfredo Calle Ferran. While the camera is still, the kiss is in motion provoking the viewer to stay and watch. Idan and Alfredo do not interact with the viewer, but offer a peek into their intimate moments of commitment. This long lasting, present and unapologetic kiss defines our current gay rights momentum. We are here, we love each other, and this is what it looks like. First Kiss became a revolition. Countless people got inspired by this movie, and made their own First Kiss You Tube projects…..

MAC-Cailtyn-Jenner-1-1

Caitlyn is the latest Jenner to make a foray into the make-up and beauty industry. Daughter Kylie already has her own covetable line of ‘Lip Kits’ while Kendall has become the face of Estee Lauder and now Caitlyn has collaborated with MAC for a lipstick with in a pink shade titled ‘Finally Free’. In an interview posted on the MAC website, Caitlyn explains the color choice,

I wanted a lipstick that would be universal, suited to more people, and was an everyday lipstick, not just a high-glam, once-in-a-while kind of lipstick. I like a little color on my lips, not a lot during the day. And this rosy nude is the color I’ve gone to. To be honest, I want people to use it every day so they have to buy more. I want to raise a lot of money. It’s very simple.

Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner has fearlessly shared her transitioned into the world. Her new MAC lipstick, Finally Free, champions All Ages, All Races, and All Sexes.

Tiffany & Co Will You?

Jeweler Tiffany & Co is featuring a same-sex couple for the first time in its advertising history

Tiffany & Co Same Sex ad

Eric Bourne (right), a Midland, Michigan native, and his husband Thomas Trube were the models for Tiffany & Co.’s latest marketing campaign. It’s the first ad for the famed jeweler to feature a same-sex couple.

A highly publicized advertisement for famed luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co featuring a Michigan native and his same-sex partner has been named one of the top LGBT-themed advertisements ofthe year. The two men depicted in the ‘Will You?’ campaign are a real-life couple. The new campaign comes at a time when public support for gay marriage has reached a new high.

The campaign was shot by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh and features six other couples. The ads are meant to broaden the 178-year-old jeweler’s portrayals of marriage, Tiffany & Co said. For example, another pairing shows a couple with their child during their wedding, a nod to people who have children outside marriage.

Nowadays, the road to marriage is no longer linear, and true love can happen more than once with love stories coming in a variety of forms. The Tiffany engagement ring is the first sentence of the story that a couple will write together as they create a life that is deeply intimate and exceptional, which is the message we hope to convey through this campaign.

Tiffany & Co

The ad, which features the men sitting on the steps of a New York City brownstone in the West Village, went public in January. The black-and-white ad shows Bourne and Trube with arms linked together and reads:

“Will you promise to never stop completing my sentences or singing off-key, which I’m afraid you do often? And will you let today be the first sentence of one long story that never, ever ends”

IMG_2677__24522.1388874458.1280.1280

Set of Tiffany & Co Platinum Wedding Rings

Eric Bourne and his partner were the only actual couple in the entire campaign, which featured seven different couples, covering the gamut of marriage.

The campaign is all about the nontraditional marriage and how love and marriage follows its own journey. To be part of that is really exciting

Eric Bourne

In recent years, several other major fashion companies have also featured same-sex couples, including Benetton, Gap, Banana Republic and J. Crew. I think this Tiffany & Co ad really promotes the beauty of marriage, no matter the gender. I hope this ad encourages other companies to support same-sex marriage. I think it’s great that a huge, iconic and traditional company like Tiffany & Co is recognizing homosexual couples.  Also because no other brand embodies the emotion and trust that Tiffany & Co does for those who are committed to one another.

More then a concert: Sylvester at War Memorial Opera House

‘You make me feel, mighty real!’ Oh, how that lyric line sung by Sylvester, the Queen of Disco Sylvester over a gospel-tinged disco beat made those who heard and danced to it truly feel mighty. That one line can sum up the impact Sylvester had on a generation of club kids, an era of music.

Sylvester and The Two Tons of FunSylvester and his girls Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes performing live at War Memorial Opera House

November 27, 1978, San Francisco was mourning of the killing of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone by Dan White, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. That evening, a spontaneous gathering began to form on Castro Street, moving toward City Hall in a candlelight vigil. Their numbers were estimated between 35,000 and 40,000, spanning the width of Market Street, extending the mile and a half (2.4 km) from Castro Street.

The next day, the bodies of George Moscone and Harvey Milk were brought to the City Hall rotunda where mourners paid their respects. Over six thousand mourners attended a service for Mayor Moscone at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Two memorials were held for Milk; a small one at Temple Emanu-El and a more boisterous one at the War Memorial Opera House.

Sylvester and Harvey Milk

Sylvester & Harvey Milk

While preparations were underway for a unique Sylvester concert at the War Memorial Opera House, several parties withdrew. It almost didn’t happen. The Opera House Board was homophobic & tried to stop the show. The lawyers for the promoter prevailed & the show went on.

March 11, 1979, Sylvester, and his girls Martha Wash, Izora Rhodes, Jeanie Tracy and Sharon Hymes, together with a large band, and the complete 26-piece San Francisco Symphony Orchestra blew of the roof of the 3,000-seat sold out War Memorial Opera House. San Francisco where Sylvester wore the moniker of the Queen of the Castro alongside his Disco title, he blends all the colors in his musical palette into a work of remarkable imagination and spirit.

A genuine original, he was the vèry first ‘modern’ artist to perform in a classic Opera House, he was one of that special breed of performers who come fully to life onstage, who have the unfailing instincts to ignite an audience with sophistication, sass, and style. In a business where clones abound, Sylvester was the real thing.

Sylvester-1979-live-in-concert-gay-anthems-1548

When asked about heroes, Sylvester is the first on lips of gay men who went out dancing in the 1970’s. Sylvester embodied the disco fantasy in wich race and gender lose their relevance.

Sylvester treated attendees to ballads, covers and medleys, in addition to Sylvester’s own hits. His falsetto sound was a mix of male and female voice. Most intriguing about the venue was the sheer range of material being performed. Sylvester covered everything from the Beatles ‘Blackbird’ to Billie Holiday’s ‘Lover Man’ to Barry Manilow’s ‘Could It Be Magic’.

Sylvester’s reinterpretations of Thelma Houston’s Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves and Patti LaBelle’s ‘You Are My Friend’ where the standout of the show as it showcased the genius interplay Sylvester, Rhodes, Wash and Tracy utilized in their live performances. Everybody sang along to the ballad version of You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) at the end of the concert….  These last three songs where much more then just ‘beautiful songs’ in a time of the city’s mourning. There tittle’s say more then enough….

However, Sylvester’s celebratory music was the voice of gay pride. In bars, clubs and concert halls, Martha Wash, Izora Rhodes backed him. The night after his historical sold-out Sylvester Concert at the War Memeorial Opera House on March 11, Mayor Diana Feinstein declared it Sylvester Day and presented him the key to the city. The people where still mourning, but the Queen of Castro was their new hero, if he wasn’t already!

Sylvester performing live, together with the Two Tons Of Fun, ‘Can’t Stop Dancing’

The Opera House gig was recorded, and subsequently released as a live double album, called Living Proof. The album contained a typically eclectic mix of blues, disco, funk and beautiful ballads. Sylvester feld that Living Proof, is “the best representation of what people had been writing about me since the day I started performing. All the energy is there”.

Living Proof present Sylvester at a key point of transition in his career where he is moving more toward his soul and cabaret roots, and paying homage to the disco that took him over the top. It is also a few years before he would go on to define NRG music.

On the double album are two studio recordings: ‘Can’t Stop Dancing’ and ‘In My Fantasy’. ‘Can’t Stop Dancing’, a single released from this album, was a huge hit in the disco clubs.

  • Ross Wilson (Trumpets, Trombones)
  • Dan Reagan (Trombones)
  • Marc Baum (Saxaphones, Flutes)
  • Jay Stolmac (Saxophones, Flutes)
  • and the ‘San Francisco Symphony’

Two months after the concert, on May 21, 1979, thousands of members of San Francisco’s predominantly gay Castro District community took to the streets to protest the lenient sentence received by Supervisor Dan White for the murders of local politician and gay rights activist Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Their anger–combined with the actions of police who arrived to quell the scene–soon boiled over into rioting. The resulting violence affected San Francisco’s LGBT community for decades to come.

Sylvester’s voice helped foster that fight… ‘Everybody is a Star!’
