Ocea Nemo 50 Ice, a yacht born to make a dream come true

Some people dream of gorgeous tropical paradises, others prefer heading to stunning landscapes in the Arcticor Antarcticaand explore uncontaminated nature or enjoy breathtaking views. And it’s just from the dream of sailing around the Antarctica continent– a lifelong dream for many owners – that the idea of the Nemo Ice, an impressive 50m aluminum sea beast lets hardy owners explore earth’s extremes in comfort and style.

The new, ambitious project that French Shipyard Ocea is developing in conjunction with their partners Aldo Manna from Ocea Italy and designer Fulvio de Simoni, is intended for people who have a big dream and want no compromises. Meet Ocea Nemo 50 Ice.

It looks very different from the personal submarine and hovercraft-hauling sporting vessel the French company was launching the last time we looked at it, but the Nemo 50 Ice project still qualifies as a ‘sport utility yacht’, according to Ocea. However, this yacht project is less about fun under the sun and much more about extended expeditions to some of the most foreboding, uncomfortable (but beautiful) latitudes in the world.

Perhaps the ultimate one-up over the adventure-hungry overlander spending millions on an all-terrain land yacht like the EarthRoamer XV-HD, the intimidatingly massive 164-foot (50-m) Nemo 50 Ice will let its owner skip over the obligatory Pan-American Highway road trip and African safaris and satiate their exploratory cravings by heading straight for the waters of the Arctic or Antarctic. That’s the type of rare-breed customer Ocea is courting with the new 50 Ice, though the big yacht will be up to the task of exploring warmer, more accessible parts of the world, as well.

Ocea’s core business experience building military ships is sure to come in handy in developing an ice class yacht built for extended trips in extreme conditions. In fact, the company says it’s currently working on a 279-footer (85-m) that will debut as the world’s largest all-aluminum military vessel. Such aluminum construction of hull and superstructure will play a key role in fortifying the 50 Ice for navigation through choppy, icy waters.

Nemo Ice has been conceived to face deep seas at high altitudes while searching for unique landscapes. She should be the perfect yacht to explore places such as the Drake Channel or the Cuverville Island with its dark rocky mountains or the astonishing Danco Island, just to name a few. Every detail has been carefully designed to ensure that guests will enjoy a comfortable stay for very long periods of time and to optimize navigation under extreme conditions.

For instance, tenders, rigid-hulled inflatable boats or landing crafts can be launched and recovered by using dedicated handling equipment: as a matter of fact, the Nemo Ice‘s cranes are exactly the same as those installed on the brand’s military ships to handle landing crafts h24 in full safety.

A technical area located forward on the ‘raised deck’ is intended to accommodate the hiking equipment: the planking level in this area, which communicates directly with the Main Saloon, is less than one meter above waterline to ensure that guests can access the tenders quickly and safely.

The engine room is a spacious, well ventilated area. There, every component, apparatus and equipment can be easily accessed for emergency repair by the technical staff. A 6 sqm, fully-equipped workshop and a control room fitted with all the remote-control systems needed to operate the vessel’s key systems in ‘manual mode’, are also available. Both the workshop and the control room are directly connected to the crew accommodations through a central passageway in the lower deck, in order to maximize the crew’s efficiency and convenience and to enhance guests’ comfort and privacy.

The 50 Ice will come powered by two CAT C32 engines putting out 1,450 bhp (1,081 kW) a piece. A set of structural skegs will protect the propellor shafts, five-blade propellers and rudders in the event of collision with an iceberg or other large, partially submerged sea debris. Ocea projects a 16-knot (30-km/h) top speed and 14-knot (26-km/h) cruising speed. With 70,000 liters of fuel on board, the 50 Ice will have a range of 5,000 nautical miles, at 10 knots (9,260 km, at 18.5 km/h).

The shafts are integrated into dedicated structural skegs, which will protect them, along with the propellers and the rudders, should the hull hit an iceberg or partially submerged objects – this type of construction being a typical feature of all the yachts Ocea has built so far.

The Nemo 50 Ice will be designed to hold 10 guests and 10 crew members. Ocea hasn’t yet released the renderings of the onboard accommodations, but it does say that the vessel will feature a full-width owner’s apartment in the fore of the main deck. Along with a bedroom, that apartment will include a private lounge/work area and a bathroom large enough to accommodate a sauna, if desired (and who wouldn’t desire a sauna when motoring through frigid, polar waters).

When travelling to far-off or unexplored lands, the crew plays a crucial role. That’s why they have large, efficient and comfortable spaces. As any crew sailing across the Oceans is made up of expert people – whether highly qualified technical personnel or explorers – their accommodations need to be designed and arranged with their duties in mind.

Ocea is currently building several military ships: the longest one – 85m – will be the largest vessel entirely in aluminum ever built for military purposes.
