Florence Nightingale Graham (December 31, 1878 – October 18, 1966), who went by the business name Elizabeth Arden, was a Canadian American businesswoman who founded what is now Elizabeth Arden, Inc., and built a cosmetics empire in the United States. In 1910 she opened on 5th Avenue her iconic Red Door Spa, which has remained synonymous with her name ever since.
She was an inovator in the field of skincare, by introducing ‘real’ skincare (cult-classic Eight Hour Cream), and cosmetics by introducing eye makeup to American women and pioneering ‘the makeover’. By 1929 she owned 150 salons in Europe and the United States. Her 1,000 products were being sold in 22 countries. She was the sole owner, and at the peak of her career she was one of the wealthiest women in the world.
The company’s initial focus was on skincare and cosmetics. However, with years Elizabeth Arden started to launch perfumes that have quickly gained compliments and fame. First Elizabeth Arden perfumes, Arden Rose and Lilac were released in 1922. They were hit sensations and still are considered to be elegant and timeless perfumes. Other breathtaking and amazing Elizabeth Arden perfumes include Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass (1936), Red Door (1989), Sunflower (1993), Untold (2013), to name just a few.
