Norell, an American classic

We hear of classic movies or albums getting remastered but what about fragrances? The classic Norell New York brand has remastered and reimagined their Norell fragrance into Norell New York.

Riley Keough photographed by Michael Avedon

Decades ago Norman Norell was known for creating an elegant and feminine look that is still emulated today. He dressed Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Priscilla Presley and other icons of his era. His style was feminine, glamorous and very 1950s New York. How do you update a fragrance for the modern era? Described as modern green floral the scent is grounded in flowers.

The modern green floral opens with a lush radiance that exudes a playful effervescence with an airy floral bouquet and a sensual finish. In fact, each bottle of Norell New York contains over 200 Jasmine petals and one of the most noble and expensive ingredients, Orris Butter.

It has top notes of galbanum, bergamot, pear and mandarin with a heart of jasmine, peony, orchid, and gardenia. The scent is anchored with orris butter, vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, and must.

Norell New York Parfum ‘Baccarat’ Limited edition

Perfumer Celine Barel created the scent and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough serves as the face of the ad campaign and wears original Norman Norell designs in photos shot by Michael Avedon, grandson of legendary photographer Richard Avedon. The choice of model and photographer was meant to be an interplay of past and present.

Re-released by Parlux Fragrances as Norell New York in 2015, the original fragrance has been reimagined and modernized to celebrate the next generation of American style setters with the pure quality of its ingredients and an exquisite blend of notes.

Handmade by famous Baccarat in France….

……the exclusive edition renders refined elegance and sophistication in form of the crystal case as well as the pure ingredients of the scent.

Norell New York, has partnered with Baccarat to produce a limited edition Parfum. Baccarat only produced 500 bottles handmade at their factory in France. The Baccarat Parfum is priced at $1,500 available at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The signature Eau de Parfum sells for $150.

The production of a haute couture fragrance is a work of art, an object of desire, a distincitve monogram, designed with the most precious natural essences, those whose names remind us of a beautiful poem. May Rose, Jasmine from Grasse, Mimosa, Champaca, Iris of Florence, Chinese Osmanthus, Sandalwood Mysore …. A painting of life whose palette carries the colors of ones passion giving the ultimate olfactory reflection of oneself.

When ordering the Bespoke Experience, the client will receive their fragrance in a 100ml Jean Patou octagonal bottle made by Baccarat, designed by Louis Sue and personalized with the name or initials of choice. The gift box will be beautifully presented made by one of three possible baggage specialists: Pinel & Pinel, Elie Bleu or Norline. Marcel Franck will accompany the fragrance with two magnificent purse atomizers.

Developed over an approximate period of one year and a minimum number of three consultations. The process starts with a meeting face to face with the in house perfumer Thomas Fontaine in which the client expresses their tastes and shares olfactive memories which merge with the imagination of the ‘nose’.   Always at the clients disposal, the perfumer then creates proposals by sending samples and adjusting with feedback until the client is happy with his or her formula. After six months of testing and maceration, 5 litres of perfume will be stored safely for refills. Creating a fragrance with Jean Patou is a unique opportunity to become part of the rich heritage of our private perfume archives dating back nearly 100 years, started by our founder Jean Patou. This also means that the record is protected for the client and their future generations to re-order.

This beautiful perfume bottle was designed by Salvador Dali at the request of the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, and made by Baccarat. In the year when World War II came to an end, Dali used the sun to symbolize the joy of peace regained and incorporated it into an image of Louis XIV, the Sun King, who represented the glory of France.

From Paris With Love: Lampe Berger

As long as can remember, there was a Lampe Berger in several rooms at Yakymour, and, as a child I was always facinated by them. Not only because of the scent it spread, but also how it worked….

Cartier Art Deco Basculante Clock, Cartier Art Deco Triptique Clock and Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge)

Begum Om Habibeh had several different scents she could use for her Lampe Berger , depending on mood or occasion. I grew up with them, my grandmother had one, my mother, and me, myself and I…. and still facinated, and enjoying it a lot!

Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge).

I can tell you how wonderfull it is, but first: what is it? A Lampe Berger is a fragrance lamp, also known as a ‘perfume lamp’, ‘catalytic lamp’ or  ‘effusion lamp’. The lamp disperses scented oil, using a heated stone attached to a cotton wick. The catalystic combusion wick was originally developed in the 19th century for use in hospitals and mortuaries. A Frenchman named Maurice Berger was the first to receive a patent (in 1897!), and the company he founded, Lampe Berger, is the oldest worldwide manufacturer of the device though there are a growing number of companies making such lamps. For myself: I go for the original!

Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge)

The lamps are sold on the premise that molecules that cause bad smells are inherently unstable and the fragrance lamp’s flame-less, low-temperature catalytic combustion speeds up the decomposition process, converting odor molecules into harmless substances (such as carbon dioxide and water). While the lamps are no longer considered effective for use in hospitals, they have remained popular as air fresheners.

Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge).

The fragrance lamp’s process is initiated by lighting the stone burner seated at the mouth of the lamp. After a few minutes the flame is extinguished by blowing it out. But; the heated burner remains active as the flame-less, low-temperature catalytic combustion process; and diffuses the aromatics throughout the room. The lamp does not operate with an open flame, making it much safer to operate than scented candles. Its lower operating temperature also means that, unlike scented candles, the aromatics are diffused very efficiently into the ambient air without being burned. One of the by-products of these fragrance lamps is low-level ozone, which has been attributed to the “purification process” of the lamps in eliminating odor.

Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge).

At Yakymour there where a few Baccarat crystal Lampe Berger’s, and my mother owned a Limoges porcelain one. Even today the ‘bottles’ are availble in countles kind of shapes, styles, colors, materials and price ranges. From classic, to ultra-modern, from around 39€ to 1500€ and everything in between. Every year Lampe Berger invites a designer or crystal house to design a limited edition for them. So… something for anyone..

Lampe Berger Bacarrat (Privat collection)(Click photo to enlarge)

The lamp fuel contains 90% isopropyl alcohol and should be regarded as a highly flammable liquid. Furthermore, to start the catalytic wick according to the instruction it is necessary to light the catalytic burner with a flame and let it burn for approximately two minutes until it reaches the correct operating temperature. At this point the flame should be extinguished in order for the oil to be diffused.

Some point sound logic maybe, but still: precautions should be taken to avoid any possible hazards:

  • Make sure the fuel container is in perfect condition, perfectly tight and not leaking.
  • When not in use, make sure the airtight cap is on at all times to prevent evaporation (alcohol vapour/air mixture is highly flammable!).
  • Do not leave unattended during operation.
  • Do not use in an unventilated room.
  • Do not inhale, ingest, or use the lamp fuel in any other manner.
  • Use only original Lampe Berger fuel, not fake ones!!
  • Take extreme caution while refilling the fragrance lamp. Make sure there is ventilation, and that there is no open flame.
  • In case of any spillage, wipe the area carefully before lighting the lamp.
  • Do not fill lamps on wooden furniture or use a lamp without a dish underneath it. The fuel will damage furniture.

Soon more about Lampe Berger, and its scents, here on Yakymour.

Guerlain L’Eau de Parfum du 68

In 1914, the house of Guerlain opened its first boutique on 68 Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris. To mark the occasion, Jacques Guerlain created the fragrance ‘Parfum des Champs-Élysées’, presenting it in a curiously shaped bottle – a nod to the protracted scructure of the boutique.

In 2013, Thierry Wasser wants to reflect the rhythm of Parisian nightlife, and has created a spicy, woody scent  that is just as vibrant and bright. Its initial notes hit with the characteristic thick sweetness of mandarins spiced with cardamom. Then a bouquet of magnolia, orange blossom and and base notes of tonka bean, benzoin and citrus feature; making it all the more tender. The final touch? Mysterious notes of cedar and incense, which are perfectly suited to the je ne sais quoi mood of the night.

Guerlain L’Eau de Parfum du 68

Guerlain sure know how to make a pretty bottle don’t they? They are, after all the people who brought us iconic housings for fragrances such as Shalimar, Insolence and La Petite Robe Noire. This one, created to celebrate the grand re-opening of their newly renovated boutique at no. 68 on the Champs-Élysées is most certainly befitting of one of the city’s most famous and wonderfully fragrant addresses.

Housing ‘Le Parfum du 68’, a tweaked version of the brand’s respectable Cologne du 68 from 2006, the classic Baccarat crystal ‘turtle’ bottle is adorned with a gilded Parisian scene created by Ateliers Gohard. Unfortunately only 30 bottles will be produced and one dreads to even think how much it would cost, still it’s rather lovely to dream, isn’t it?

Guerlain Le Parfum du 68 Baccarat Gohard

Fortunately however, when one allows oneself to remember that it is in fact all about the juice, not the bottle, there will be the option of a more affordable EDP exclusively available at Maison Guerlain and housed within a decidedly less fancy bottle.

Lacoste + Maisons Francaises 80th Anniversary Collection

There are collaborations, and then there are collaborations that blow your mind. This, the Lacoste x Maisons Francaises collection, has certainly done that and more. In celebration of the French fashion house’s 80th anniversary, they invited 9 French houses (collectively known as Maisons Francaises), which created one-of-a-kind masterpieces for them, most of which will (sadly) never be sold to the public.

These unique objects are symbols of the craftsmanship, expertise and know-how of some of the greatest names in French luxury.

A common theme in all the precious pieces created for Lacoste features either the brand’s corporate hues, its iconic crocodile and/or a tribute to its heritage, which includes sporting apparel for tennis, golf and sailing.

Lacoste x S.T. Dupont gift set

Take S.T. Dupont’s purposely mysterious set in pristine white and lawn green for example, filled with a beautiful lighter Ligne 2, two candles, a notebook and two pens: Elysée and Classique, an ideal kit for any sportsman (or man for that matter).

Lacoste x Baccarat bowl

Maison Baccarat created a crystal vase inspired by the tennis and golf trophies that René Lacoste, his wife, daughter, and all of the Lacoste champions ever since, held high above their head. The design of this work of art is reminiscent of the prevalent shapes of the 1930s.

And then there’s the stunning crystal bowl from Baccarat, which reminds me of a deconstructed tennis ball. Last but not least, my third most favourite piece from the collaboration, this pair of Boucheron brooches in the shape of the crocodile that’s made up of diamonds and emeralds, fitting because René Lacoste once gifted his wife with a brooch from Boucheron.

Lacoste x Boucheron diamomd and emerald brooches

Maison Boucheron created two brooches inspired by the legendary crocodile. Made of diamonds and emeralds, these jewels are a modern interpretation of the Boucheron brooch René Lacoste gifted his wife.

Lacoste x Christofle sterling silver club

Maison Christofle pays tribute to Lacoste by producing a silver golf club.

Lacoste x Hermès tennis crocodile bag

Maison Hermès offers Lacoste a crocodile-skin tennis bag.

Lacoste x Goyard travel bag

The Maison Goyard travel bag with a crocodile and chevron-patterned monogram.

Lacoste x Bernardaud golf tees

René Lacoste married golf legend Simone Thion de la Chaume and Bernardaud presents 27 colourful golf tees inspired by the joyful palette of the Lacoste polo. Until the 1950s, the Lacoste polo was only produced in white, but today, about 60 colors are available every season.

Lacoste x Veuve Clicquot personalised Champagne

The popping cork of champagne, on the night of the anniversary, should echo the noise of a golf ball dropping in the hole on a golf course. As such Veuve Clicquot manufactured a special trolley.

Lacoste x Fauchon chocolate eclairs

Fauchon celebrates Lacoste’s 80th with its signature pastry: the éclair. Flavours include green tea, almond, vanilla, and lemon and strawberry. The finishing touch is a marshmallow crocodile. I’m sure are as tasty as they look.

The selection from Christofle, Bernardaud, Boucheron, and S.T. Dupont will be available for order should you be interested in making one of the specialty items your own, while the Hermès, Goyard, Baccarat, and Veuve Clicquot pieces will be kept in the Lacoste archives, hopefully appearing at the 80th-anniversary fete set for September.

The collection, although unavailable to buy, will go on display from June 10 until June 15 at Colette in Paris. Check them out here via Lacoste.
