Haute automobile: Bentley Mulsanne Ares Coupé

With its Coupé, made upon the superbe Mulsanne sedan base, Ares Design brings the sporty elegance of the Bentley’s two-door grand tourers back to life. A new chapter in the long history of collaborations between historic English manufacturers and Italian coachbuilders, a story that is now almost a hundred years old.

In the finest tradition of handcrafted bespoke coach-building, Ares Design has crafted this stunning two-door Coupé for Bentley Mulsanne, based on Bentley’s four-door saloon.

Throughout the 20th century Bentley was one of the most popular marques for coachbuilders so it’s perhaps fitting that Ares Design chose Bentley’s four-door Mulsanne as the basis for this spectacular recreation of a Bentley Coupé. Using cutting-edge 21st century techniques Ares Design has created an exquisite Bentley Coupe for the modern era.

The Bentley Mulsanne Ares Coupé will be built in extremely limited numbers for customers who appreciate Bentley’s British style but would like a bespoke Italian handcrafted creation. Carrying out such a comprehensive reimagining of the classic vehicle is a formidable task but, by creatively fusing modern and traditional methods, Ares Design has built a stunning, exclusive vehicle.

Exterior

Before the physical work began, Ares Design carried out a full three- dimensional scan of the four-door Mulsanne and, once this data had been processed, it provided the basis for Ares to complete the necessary CAD work on the car. Extensive computer modelling resulted in a new look for the Coupé, with a significantly more graceful roof-line and re-profiled C-pillars integrating seamlessly into its rear wing structure.

The angle of the rear window has been adjusted and a new section of the rear deck between the base of the window and the original boot lid was constructed.
As a result of the attention to detail put into the project, the whole conversion of the Bentley Mulsanne Coupé carries full TüV approval.

With its Coupé, Ares Design has utilised the time-honoured principles of coachbuilding to transform Bentley’s Mulsanne into a unique and desirable Coupé that offers the most exceptional level of craftsmanship. The conversion process included moving the B-pillar further back to facilitate the fitment of longer front doors. New rear quarter panels were fabricated from aluminium while the extended doors and the entire central roof panel were constructed from the finest grade carbon fibre.

Fresh chrome surrounds were required for the re-profiled rear windows and roof line while bespoke glass units were commissioned. In its final form, the Coupé is lighter and has better aerodynamics than the original four-door. Also thanks to an Ares Design performance upgrade, the two-door Mulsanne performs as well as its stunning good looks suggest.

Interior

Inside the Bentley Mulsanne Ares Coupé, extensive changes have been made to accommodate the two-door configuration. Bespoke front seats are installed to allow entry and egress to the rear seats and the front seats are trimmed to match the rest of the interior. Unique modifications have been carried out to the rear door trim panels to fit the coupe body style.

By not altering the wheelbase it allowed the Bentley Mulsanne Coupé to have the sleek, elegant design of a true grand tourer, while maintaining the first-class comfort of a sedan. Designed with the most modern technologies, crafted with the best materials, created for the most demanding connoisseurs.

The sporty look of the new, two-door body pleasantly contrasts with the typical, luxurious interior design of the Bentley Mulsanne. Aluminium, wood, leather, carbon fiber: the driving environment can be completely trimmed and customized, for a truly bespoke experience. What do you think of: a front screen infotainment system with 8“ high-resolution screen; satellite radio; a Mulsanne audio system with 14 speakers, two subwoofers, powered through six channels, with digital sound processing.

The stage is set in Monaco: from today until Saturday 29th, you will be able to see the Bentley Mulsanne Ares Coupé, and many other creations from their Factory in the Car Deck of 2018 Monaco Yacht Show!

Bentley Celebrates 100th Birthday With 100 W.O Edition Mulsannes

Bentley has begun its centenary celebrations a year early with the reveal of its 100th anniversary Mulsanne special edition. Dubbed the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner, the luxury limousine will pay tribute to W.O. Bentley, who started the British company in 1919.

Britisch car maker Bentley will turn 100 years old on 10 July 2019. The automotive company today manufactures every car at the Bentley factory in Crewe, north-west of England, by a team of some 4,000 highly-skilled people. Bentley has come a long way since its first prototype crafted in a humble London mews, and later the original 3 Litre, to the very much refined vehicles of modern era. And the legacy of Bentley, always designed and built by exceptional people, no less.

To commemorate the Centenary, Bentley created the limited edition Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner that will only see a production quantity of 100, with a public debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and deliveries commencing in 2019. Customers will be able to choose whether their vehicle is delivered with the ‘standard’ Mulsanne’s 6.75-liter V8 petrol engine with 505 hp or the more powerful 530 hp unit from the Mulsanne Speed. The extra power cuts two-tenths from the standard car’s 5.3-second 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) time.

Each limited edition Mulsanne will also have a piece of Bentley’s original 8 Litre car inside in honour of company founder Walter Owen Bentley, whose personal vehicle was the last one he designed for his company and the second example off Bentley’s production line. The piece of the 8 Litre’s crankshaft will be on display in the Mulliner illuminated cocktail cabinet’s display window, accompanied by an inscription that details the significance of it.

The limited edition car will sport the signature Onyx paint on the outside, but owners of the cars will be given the option to order the car in their preferred shade. A small W.O. Bentley signature can also be found on the lower bumper, and special centenary badging on the wheel center caps and door sills, adding unique touches and finishes to the commemorative car.

Inside, the Mulsanne is fitted with Fireglow Heritage hides with Beluga detailing and stitching, a symbolic tribute to the original 8 Litre. The wood dash is embellished with the founder’s signatue, and a cooler for chilling drinks is built hidden in the rear seats.

The Mulsanne W.O Edition by Mulliner is available on all three Mulsanne models, including the Speed. Other options include the longer Extended Wheelbase body style, although ticking this box will limit customers to the less potent engine. Whichever model they choose, though, the lucky 100 will receive their cars in 2019, just as Bentley celebrates its big birthday.
