Dermalogica reduce waste and increase recyclability

Impacting the skin care industry, and the environment, for good. Global skin care brand dermalogica introduces new mono-material pump packaging that can reduce waste and increase recyclability

The beauty industry has a pump problem. Pumps are increasingly used but widely unsustainable. Today, we aim to fix the problem.

Aurelian Lis, Dermalogica’s chief executive officer

Starting in 2022, Dermalogica will integrate recyclable pumps into its best-selling facial cleansers. Most pumps on the market are seemingly made of plastic, but actually include an internal metal spring, making them difficult to recycle and ineligble for most recycling collection services. Dermalogica’s new mono-material pump consists of a plastic spring, which – like its bottles – is made of recyclable polyethylene, making it possible to dispose of the bottle and pump as one unit by simply placing it directly into the recycling bin. Additionally, the new pump is lighter weight, utilizing less virgin plastic which means a decreased demand on a non-renewable resource. This new packaging solution brings Dermalogica closer to its goal of having 100% of its bottles designed to be reused, recycled or composted by 2025.

As the industry leader, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to make a positive impact, not just on peoples’ skin, but on the environment. Being the first major skincare brand to launch these recyclable, mono-material pumps puts pressure on other brands to follow our example and innovate on behalf of the planet.

Dermalogica partnered with industry packaging leader, Aptar, to provide the customized, recyclable pumps. Aptar designs, develops, and innovates its product solutions with people and the planet in mind. The cutting edge, innovative, pump solution has received multiple industry certifications for the implementation of eco-design principles and has earned recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers Meets Preferred Guidance Program and RecyClass, a cross-industry initiative focused on harmonized recyclability.  Dermalogica is the first skincare brand to incorporate the pumps into its packaging, ensuring a more seamless recycling experience for customers and skin professionals across the globe.

Dermalogica’s mono-material packaging solution helps ensure that the entire package can be easily recycled with no confusion. As part of Dermalogica’s ongoing ‘Healthy Skin, Healthy Planet’ initiative, Dermalogica is also introducing new bottles made from 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin plastic. Dermalogica began to roll out 50% PCR bottles in early 2021, expanding this PCR integration across full-size cleansers and toners by 2025. The mono-material pump will be available in 2022, starting with the 16.9oz sizes of Special Cleansing Gel, UltraCalming Cleanser, and Clearing Skin Wash. For more information, click here.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant

New Daily Superfoliant Reveal E-Blast

This large bottle is filled with finely milled charcoal and other exfoliants, as well as a foaming cleanser that really makes skin feel clean.

Dermalogica’s Daily Superfoliant is brand new and adds to the brand’s already well-known exfoliators.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant1a

It’s different in its category because it comes out as a powder and you mix it with water. As soon as you do, it foams up and you can rub it on your skin. The powder is so finely milled that you’ll feel a slight grittiness but not actually a scrubbing feeling like there is with most scrubs.

This advanced powder formula activates upon contact with water, releasing powerful enzymes and skin-smoothing AHAs that resurface the skin. Activated Binchotan Charcoal absorbs environmental pollutants know to irritate the skin and accelerate skin aging while Niacinamide, Red Algae and Tara Fruit form a shield to prevent further damage from pollutants.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant2

Because there’s also cleanser in the formula, this is great at wiping off remnants of makeup or previous cleanser. Your skin is super clean but also brighter because of the scrubbing. You can use it daily, or as often as your skin can handle it. My skin is pretty oily so it can handle a daily scrub.

As the name suggests, it can be used daily, but if you have quite sensitive skin I’d recommend gradually working it into your routine to acclimate your skin to it. I like to keep the bottle in my shower for mess-free mixing!

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant3

Instantly, my skin felt incredibly soft. It’s a bit harder to gauge the long-term detoxifying effects, but my complexion looked rosy, glowing and not at all irritated—so that’s a great start.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant is available in a package with 57gr. powder.

Dermalogica Hydrablur Primer

dermalogica_hydrablur_primer_22ml

Dermalogica are historically known for their great skincare so when they combine their innovative skincare experience with cosmetics, the result is probably going to be great. This primer has to be one of the best I’ve used in a while. Hydrablur creates the perfect canvas for your makeup.

The formulation has been developed with a premise to hydrate the skin whilst also giving a good primer base. The product’s formulation spreads well and you don’t need a lot on your face. It helps to mattify your skin without drying it out and reduces the appearance of pores and uneven skin so that it leaves a silky and luminous finish. So fine lines and wrinkles are given a blurred effect creating a smooth surface for makeup application.

dermalogica-hydrablur-primer-1When you apply your foundation, it goes on smoothly and really helps to keep your foundation in place throughout the day. The best thing was how hydrated my skin felt throughout the day, even sitting in a heated office. It’s not one of those primers that sits on your face, the dual action product is really worth every cent.

Dermalogica’s new Ultra Calming Range for Sensitive Skin

Dermalogica, has released the UltraCalming range, a complete system to help manage the multiple causes behind sensitised, inflamed skin, which can stem from a genetic predisposition towards sensitivity or as a result from environmental assaults. It’s a hostile world, and the effects of stress, pollution, climatic extremes, medical procedures and even the foods we eat reflect on our skin.

Sensitivity comes in many forms although, the solutions comes in one. Itching, burning, stinging and redness are obvious signs of sensitive skin. The triggers behind these sensations are less clear: genetics, hormones, stress, chemical assaults, foods and even aggressive exfoliation can intensify skin’s highly reactive state. These inflammatory responses include:

  • Immunogenic inflammation: When skin is under assault, localised skin cells are alerted and activated to fight off the ‘invader’. This allergic reaction in skin triggers redness, soreness, and itchiness.
  • Neurogenic inflammation: Whereas immunogenic inflammation is triggered by the immune system, neurogenic inflammation is triggered by the nervous system. When an irritant chemical activates nerve sensors, it results in the release of substances that also trigger the inflammatory cascade, resulting in redness, soreness and itchiness.

The good news is that sensitised skin can be treated and all the UltraCalming products feature the highly-effective, proprietary UltraCalming Complex. This multi-benefit complex includes active ingredients that mediate immunogenic and neurogenic inflammatory triggers for immediate and long-term relief of inflamed, sensitised skin. It also includes botanicals and peptides that help mimic skin’s natural protective barrier, helping to strengthen skin cell structure against water loss and defend against dehydration-induced sensitisation.

True to Dermalogica formulation standards, all UltraCalming products are free of known sensitisers like artificial fragrances and dyes, and tackle the challenges of treating sensitised, highly-reactive and recently resurfaced skin.

As science explores these multiple pathways, Dermalogica continues to research ingredients to deliver serious relief for sensitive skin. Found within each product in the range, the UltraCalming Complex consists of:

  • Boerhavia Diffusa (Red Hogweed) root extract: Targets neurogenic inflammation by limiting the production of pro-inflammatory agents as well as promoting the production of natural anti-inflammatory agents in the skin
  • Avena Sativa (Oat kernel) extracts: Rich in avenanthramides, the active components of the Avena Sativa plant which have been widely studied and proven to have natural anti-irritant and anti-redness properties.
  • Zingiber officinate (Ginger) and Bisabolol (derived from Chamomile): Work synergistically to help reduce redness and irritation.

Ask your skin therapist about UltraCalming skin care products, to determine which products are best for you.
