Fred rediscovers one of the world’s most incredible yellow diamonds, its emblematic Soleil d’Or, after more than 44 years apart

For French Maison Fred’s first retrospective exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in the autumn of 2022, then in Asia during 2023, the high jewelry Maison has gone in search of the pieces that have shaped its 85-year history. It is why Valérie Samuel, Vice-President and Artistic Director of Fred, and granddaughter of the founder, launched the global campaign ‘Fred seeks Fred’ in 2020. She did not know back then what fate had in mind for her…

Fred Samuel founded his Maison in 1936. The ‘Creative Modern Jeweler’ soon attracted a clientele of celebrities and royal and princely families entrusted him with their special commissions. To fulfil them, the jeweler started seeking gemstones that would help him create true masterpieces. Fred undoubtedly became the jeweler specializing in color. Its visionary spirit and expertise gave rise to exceptional pieces, including ‘Pretty Coeur’, fascinating jewels, such as the ‘Oiseau’ (Bird) brooch, made of multicolored sapphires, just to name of few, and of course, the Soleil d’Or.

Fred crossed path with this exceptional stone in 1977. Anonymous diamond, with an incredible 105.54-carat weight and a ‘Fancy Yellow’ shade, it quickly became one of the most fascinating pieces of its time. Unusually beautiful in every aspect, its solar radiance and glittering color was enough for Henri Samuel to dub it the Soleil d’Or. It held something of the French Riviera sunlight and embodied the joie de vivre, optimism, energy, and warmth that have brought to life every jewelry piece designed by the Maison. The Soleil d’Or was unveiled to the general public on November 24th, 1977, during an exhibition organized at Fred’s historic boutique in Paris. Another event, held before the exhibition at Maxim’s, which actress Margaux Hemingway attended, where she playfully pretended to lose the stone for a short amount of time, turned it into an eternal icon.

Then, colored stones became a signature passion throughout Fred’s history, but the Soleil d’Or was and will be its most beautiful story. “When we put the Soleil d’Or in the context of Fred’s history, we appreciate how it completely embodies a jewelry house that excels in creating and marketing jewelry in its own unique way” says Charles Leung, CEO of Fred. Indeed, the Soleil d’Or disappeared from view in the secrets of private collectors in November 1977, but its memory has very much been kept alive. It was actually ranked 52nd in the list of the world’s largest cut diamonds in Ian Balfour’s book ‘Famous Diamonds’. It has also introduced Fred to the private circle of jewelers to hold stones of over 100 carats.

In 2021, after more than 44 years apart, the Soleil d’Or reappeared thanks to the search for archive material led by Valérie Samuel. The stone has been polished and recut in an emerald cut with angled corners. It now weighs 101.57 carats, and the new shape magnifies its color, described as ‘Fancy Intense Yellow’. The Soleil d’Or is a genuine treasure thanks to its magnificent size, exceptionally rich color, and rarity in nature.

The fabulous gemstone has finally returned to the Maison’s heritage, and it recounts its genius and expertise. But there is more to it. Indeed, “its color, brimming with youth, energy and even confidence in the future, will be a permanent inspiration for the next chapter in Fred’s history”, concludes Charles Leung.

Maison Fred for Le Printemps des Étudiants

After supporting ‘Les Visières de l’Espoir’ in 2020, French Maison Fred and its ‘Freddies’ are committed to the Co’P1 – Solidarités Étudiantes Association in 2021 in order to support the students in precarious situations due to the health crisis. Co’P1 was created in 2020 by students and distributes more than 600 food baskets every week to students in precarious situations in France.

The French jeweller and watchmaker’s support for the CO’P1 Association revolves around 3 actions. The first one is the contribution to the Tajan Auction House auction ‘Le Printemps des Étudiants’ for the benefit of the Co’P1 Association. A Force 10 bracelet, awarded during an exclusive discovery of the Heritage of la Maison Fred in the company of Valérie Samuel, Vice-President and Artistic Director, will be auctioned online from May 4th to May 11th.

The second one is a financial donation from la Maison Fred. And finally, the Maison’s employees in France will donate food and hygiene products to grow the baskets given to students.

Let’s stay strong and united!

Say yes to Fred’s Lovelight collection

fred-lovelight-bridal-collection-gif.gif

Famous Parisian jewelry house Fred is often compared to the world’s best jewelry houses. Fred Samuel was a master of colored stones who seduced his clients with the chic lifestyle of the French Riviera at its peak. Opening his first jewelry shop in Paris in 1936, the jeweler became famous by transforming original drawings by Jean Cocteau into glowing jewels, garnering celebrity and royal clients around the world.

Inspired by the freedom of the sea, and the colors and textures of the Côte d’Azur, today the brand’s modern ingenuity remains in the spotlight with colorful and unique jewels featuring exceptional stones.

Its unique teardrop-cut diamond is the modern symbol of eternal love.

If paging through endless copies of glossy wedding magazines still has you coming up short in the inspiration department for your own big day, you might want to consider our alternative guide when it comes to tying the knot. For that matter, before you even remotely fuss about the dress and the seating arrangements, the ring takes priority. And while a rock from a maison of renown has a spot in our books, we get the women who are casting their nets wider and further for something a little under the radar (read: A ring that’s not flashing on the finger of every other bride).

Enter Fred with the Lovelight collection – yes, besides your favourite Force 10 bracelet they do bridal stuff too – which features new additions that sees the brilliant-cut diamonds set on the outside as opposed to taking pride of place as the centre stone. Instead, this spot goes to a 1-carat teardrop-shaped solitaire, uniquely positioned sideways. Even the band itself is of a graphic make, reinvented by the French jeweller in an open bandeau style to create an engagement ring that’s immaculately modern yet timeless. Meant to immortalise that meaningful ‘I do’ moment, the Lovelight collection also includes a pendant necklace and earrings in the same teardrop design for a matching parure to wear down the aisle.

This is an iconic design. The design is versatile enough for this to be worn as an engagement ring, a daily-wearer, or an elegant cocktail ring. It is extremely well made, crafted by the best artisans using some of the best diamonds.

The workmanship is stunning. The universal appeal of the design would make it a perfect and timeless gift for yourself and for your loved ones.

The new Fred Force 10 bracelet collection

fred_force-10-collection1.jpg

The idea is simple enough, but when it’s executed so well it certainly deserves a second look. What am I talking about? Well, have a look at Fred’s iconic Force 10 bracelet collection which was first designed in 1966 by the son of the founder, Henri Samuel, for his wife. The founder? Fred Samuel, the son of an Argentinian jeweller who sent him to France and who then established Fred Joaillier in 1936 in Paris, which is where the story of the storied jewellery house began.

Fred is a prestigious, creative jewelry brand and a symbol of magical luxury, liberated from tedious traditions and featuring unmistakably French flair. Just like its creator, Fred Samuel, a passionate man of exceptional encounters.

Growing up in South America, Fred Samuel had a great love of the sea, which you could say inspired his son to create the Force 10 bracelets. He braided marine cables together, secured both ends to a buckle that’s also nautical-inspired and as they say, the rest is history.

fred_force-10-collection2.jpg

Still manually produced today, the LVMH-owned jeweller’s bracelets are woven with up to 1500 threads in steel or gold, which pretty much means they are virtually indestructible. They also come in huge variety of colours (and by huge, I mean immense) that both girls and guys will find irresistible, from pastel hues to bold manly colours both sexes will appreciate.

After the bracelet comes the buckle, which comes only in precious metals. Yes, precious metals, no silver shit, not weird alloys, just pure gold that you can pick from in Yellow, White and even Rose golds. And if that’s not enough for you, you can also pick from the ‘exotics’: from buckles in pavé diamonds to buckles in ceramic, the choices are truly endless.

fred_force-10-collection3.jpg

How much do they cost, you ask? The bracelets start from around €250, and the buckles, from €1695. Put them together and a basic ‘entry-level’ set will set you back by almost €1950, which really isn’t a lot when you consider the bracelet that won’t break or fade, and the buckles that are quite literally worth their weight in gold.

Fred Joaillier Pretty in Pink

‘Force 10’, ‘Pain de Sucre’, ‘Baie des Anges’… famous jeweller Fred’s most emblematic collections are on show in the new Saint-Tropez store. The timeless, ever-contemporary ‘Force 10’, created in 1966, speaks to us loudly of sailing through its teaming of a cable crafted in the very tradition of 17th-century rope rigging with a buckle in white, yellow or pink gold. The cable itself comes in white, black and a whole array of bright colours including neon yellow.

The latest new addition to the collection is the stunning ‘Force 10’ watch in steel. If you’re into stones you won’t be able to resist the ‘Pain de Sucre’ collection with its sensual lines and electric energy, not to mention the clip system that allows you to switch between topaz, amethyst, pink quartz or diamonds to match your mood and/or outfit most glamorously.

Come into the beautiful and timeless world of Fred.
