I wanted to create something exceptional, that smells like a luxury. I was amazed by the way women and men practice layering in the Middle East, mixing and applying their very personal oud preparation. I wanted to offer an oud signature from Louis Vuitton, which is why I’ve invited the Middle Eastern style of perfumery into the Louis Vuitton flacon.

It is said that it is the scent of paradise and its meaning in Arabic ‘wood’ Oud is an absolute component of any raw material that has great depth and multiple aspects, as if it contains all other aspects, it is a treasure of nature it is the precious ‘black gold’ to the extent that the finest in its purity is reserved for an exclusive elite of people. The Oud contains countless distinctive ingredients where it offers its fans a completely unique experience, in its complex components and richness of symbolism and global resonance the oud is a journey in itself, smuggled through time and space, a gateway to the absolute world.

To present the purest expression of oud by simplifying one of the most beautiful fragrances in the world is the essence of pure oud, to highlight the raw beauty of this rare ingredient, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud created a near-contradictory encounter between the dreary character of the Oud focused on 10% of the composition and luminous softness of two types of white musk, ambrettolide and helvetolide. A gentle and slightly fruity helveled, and a delicate cotton empreted. The Oud weaves into an ornate cocoon that encapsulates and supports it without strangulation, and emerges from it strong wooden puffs and reveals the richness of its animal reflections.

It is important to note that the agar trees used to create oud have been declared a potentially threatened species by CITES, making the harvesting of oud for fragrances potentially environmentally damaging. To ensure they are maintaining the least harmful production practices possible, Vuitton is working with a family-run team of producers in Bangladesh, who have cultivated oud for the past 200 years. 

Pure Oud is available in the French Maison’s iconic perfume flacon, but this time in stained black glass. Pure, dense and deep to the point that, paradoxically, it reveals a stunning reflection of light, such as the fragrance it carries.

Louis Vuitton Pur Oud is available as 100ml Eau de Parfum. A limited and rare fragrance (there are only 2,000 flacons available), and it’s the most expensive of the Louis Vuitton line-up (each flacon comes in at €1,200). Sustainability is now at the forefront of Bvlgari, as they are moving to completely plastic-free packaging for their watches and jewelry, which will save more than 150 tons of plastic per year.

“Jewelry by definition is sustainable”, Babin says. “More than 95 percent of our jewelry is made from recycled gold. We don’t participate any longer in gold extraction from the planet”. All plastic is also being eliminated from Bulgari hotels. Another conscious effort is that the Allegra collection is crafted with natural ingredients whenever possible.

While French Maison Louis Vuitton is primarily known for its bags and leather goods, the marquee has made a quite a splash in the world of fragrance. The brand’s much touted for Les Parfums Louis Vuitton collection is a testament to its mastery in making perfumes which is further sealed with the release of a unique new scent: Heures d’Absence.

The Les Parfums Louis Vuitton collection has been supplemented with a floral creation, a sophisticated and feminine ode to the French Maison’s perfume collection, whose composition develops flower by flower.

The new creation was inspired by the first Louis Vuitton fragrance Heures d’Absence launched in 1927, which was aimed at both men and women. Named after Georges Vuitton’s villa, the fragrance was presented to mark the opening of the new London store, and was available in only 300 copies.

The small airplane on the body of the rectangular glass flacon was the embodiment of the love for travel and exploration of the world, and for the 2020 creation, perfumer  Jacques Cavallier Belletrud relied on several components from the first fragrance to re-materialize it and include it into the collection once again.

Louis Vuitton Heures d’Absence brings freshness and whiteness to jasmine sambac. Its sharpness blends gently with the freshly cut May roses that give off a romantic vibe. The scent of jasmine in the composition is enhanced as the most prominent flower thanks to CO2 extraction technology, while mixing it with the aromatic pittosporum flower brings harmony and joy to the flowery collage.

The powdery and bright mimosa chord has a fine honey like and fluffy effect, giving the watercolor rose flowers a dose of sunshine, along with the delicacy of raspberries that make the flower bouquet more complex and sophisticatedly sweet. The subtle, silky warmth of vanilla gently envelops the flowers, combined with a creamy base of sandalwood and musk supporting the beauty of each flower and emphasizing the sophistication of the creation.

The idea for the new fragrance came to Jacques Cavallier’s mind when he was working in his creative atelier in the historic French perfume town of Grasse, just a stone’s throw from fields of flowers. The heady yet fresh floral-woody composition is inspired by floral fields of Grasse and scents of summer. His interpretation of his surroundings translated to notes of crisp pear and rich jasmine, sparking freshness and sensuality.

Heart: Egyptian jasmine, ylang-ylang, narcissus
Base: moss, musk

A combination of fresh pear and rich jasmine offers the signature of contemporary women’s perfumes, along with pure undertones of ambrette seeds. Accords of narcissus, moss and patchouli round out the perfume and give it a touch of nostalgia. It is ‘a perfume with a compelling character, suspended somewhere between freshness and sensuality’.

Renowned perfumers often leave their mark with a single famous creation that changes the industry, but a few do so with not one – or two – but many different perfumes. Perfumer Jacques Cavallier is just such a figure, having changed our scented world with such industry changers as Jean Paul Gaultier’s Classique, Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey, Lancôme’s Poême and Nina Ricci’s Nina. He has created perfumes for Maison’s as famous as Christian Dior, Givenchy, Rochas, designers like Giorgio Armani and Stella McCartney, and niches like Caudalie and Eau d’Italie.

Although Jacques Cavallier has one of the most extensive backgrounds in natural scent materials, it was inventive use of Calone-1951, the component sometimes referred to as ‘watermelon ketone’ that brought him the most attention for his early creations. He brought a freshness and light to perfumes like L’Eau d’Issey that re-imagined what a fragrance could be.

As a schoolboy in Grasse, Jacques Cavalier Belletrud would walk by an imposing portal. He had no idea what sat behind the wrought iron gates that so intrigued him. Little could he have imagined that, in 2016, this very place would become his creative workshop.

From my earliest childhood I heard all about perfume. Creating scents is like breathing for me – it’s just the obvious thing to do.

Jacques Cavallier was fittingly born in 1962 in Grasse, France, the third in a series of perfuming men. Like his father and grandfather before him, he dedicated himself to the study there in his home turf.

At the age of eight, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud went to his father, and told him he wanted to follow in his footsteps. He learned perfume notes the way other children practiced piano scales. When he got good grades in school, his father allowed him to weigh out formulas. The day after receiving his high school diploma, he began working in a perfume factory in Grasse, where he learned to distill flowers.

He studied French and Spanish at the University of Nice, and at 18, he created his first formula – but his father reminded him that becoming a perfumer takes much more than mixing a few scents together. It would take a lot of hard work to be hired at the famous perfume and flavor company Firmenich that he met Alberto Morillas, with whom he collaborated on many perfumes, and where he would spend the next 22 years.

Jacques is a perfumer of great variation and considerable range. His work is intensely wearable, and it may be due alone to this singular quality that he was awarded the Prix François Coty at the Prix International du Parfum in 2004.

For a long time Jacques Cavallier Belletrud worked for Firmenich, a company that produces perfumes for other brands, he moved on to the LVMH group (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey SE) in 2012, where he works together with François Demachy as in-house master perfumer, and becoming the exclusive perfumer for Louis Vuitton. Named Maître Parfumeur of Louis Vuitton, he traveled the world for four years to perfect the first collection of Louis Vuitton perfumes. The French Maison hadn’t released any scents since the mid-twentieth century, marking new territory in creative exploration for them.

Louis Vuitton Launches Nature-Inspired Candle Collection

Maison Louis Vuitton has announced that its in-house perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the man behind its fragrances, has created a new range of four candles to expand upon the brand’s olfactory offering.

The ceramic pots that house the candles have been designed by Marc Newson, who crafted the bottles of Les Parfum Louis Vuitton. Each candle has a handle made of natural leather, which is attached via metal studs, with a gold-finish metal lid doubling as a coaster.

The scents, as described by the French Maison, were imagined ‘like a house with windows open to the world’ capturing the essence of a breeze travelling from the outdoors, in. The four fragrances have been composed like snapshots of moments suspended in time, which can be relived when the candle is lighted anew.

L’Air du Jardin invokes the spirit of rosebuds. It bottles the scent of the rose centifolia that blossoms in Grasse each spring.

Louis Vuitton Dehors Il Neige

Dehors Il Neige inspired by the smell of a fireplace crackling inside whilst it snows outside made using star anise and cinnamon (to recall holiday memories in December) and finished with raspberry.

Designed by Marc Newson, the candles are cast in handmade white ceramic pots that will look good literally anywhere you decide to put them, both whilst the candle is burning and when it is finished. The containers also have a natural leather hand-sewn handle, a gold lid and are finished with a fun detail: colourful wicks which were hand-painted in Grasse.

The candles will retail at €175 (approximately $203) and are available to buy from November 5 online and in selected stores. Watch out! You might never want to leave your house!

We has just received word that French Maison Louis Vuitton is releasing a new fragrance in March. Here’s what we know so far…

Discovering a new scent is one of life’s most enjoyable pleasures. From holding the bottle to the all-important first spritz and discovering the notes as they land on your skin, the olfactory journey is one that never gets old.

Now, our senses are in for something special this year as Louis Vuitton has just announced the launch of a new fragrance. Titled Le Jour Se Lève, the scent is the Maison’s is following its collection of seven scents in 2016. Created by the house’s Master Perfumer, Jacques Cavallier, the scent captures the essence of daybreak, the moment of infinite possibilities full of fresh hope and optimism.

With a pleasant floral/fruity aroma. The new perfume starts to impress with a refreshing opening of the perfume’s main note mandarin, and is joined by spice blackcurrant along with floral accords of jasmine and magnolia. The base calms on a woody layer made of osmanthus and musks. A scent that is both crisp and commanding.

Mandarin is a marvellous citrus fruit because it’s possible to diffuse from it simultaneously the optimism of the flesh, the freshness of the zest and the floral aspect of the tree.

As with the brand’s previous fragrance collections, the new scent will be able to be refilled in store once finished to ensure that your signature scent remains with you forever.

Louis Vuitton Le Jour Se Lève Travel Spray

Louis Vuitton Le Jour Se Lève would be available in 100 and 200ml Eau de Parfum and as purse spray (including three refils).

Haute Joallier Bulgari presents the new ‘Le Gemme’ collection dedicated to men. A new revolutionary chapter in the story of the Roman jeweller. To illustrate the ambivalence of black onyx the Perfumer chose the power of royal Oud. It has the balance between the different facets of this ingredient, a symbol of wealth and rank in Oriental countries where it has been used it for millennia. A product that is more expensive than gold, which is one of the most beautiful and loved natural notes in the world. For ‘Onekh’, Jacques Cavallier has used a sublime natural Oud: leathery and spicy wood, with notes of saffron and honey. The contrast between brittle, dry and smoked woods and the balmy, addictive and sensual notes serve to enhance this Oud of unprecedented quality.

Bulgari Garanat

A symbol of the passion accompanying the deep red of the Garnet, but also of its light, the Perfumer has imagined a supremely elegant and virile Rose, translating the powerful energy of its colour which anchors this gemstone known since the dawn of times in the cradle of the greatest civilisations. A duality in which ancient mysteries and sophistication answer each other, transcribed in the dialogue between two symbolic ingredients: Rose and Incense. ‘Garanat’ is a perfume that is as rich and thick as velvet: curls of Roses and intoxicating incense chiaroscuro create a warm, surprising and fascinating fragrance with great masculine strength.

Bulgari Gyan

Brightened by a generous dose of night Jasmine which envelops the scent with its sensuality, Patchouli illustrates the mysteries of the blue of the Sapphire in ‘Gyan’. This unique creation combines Patchouli with a flower, and delivers a very sophisticated particularly masculine perfume with an incomparable sillage: its trilogy of woods, dominated by its extraordinary heart of Indonesian Patchouli, illustrates the aristocratic grandeur and elegance of this stone of knowledge he pays tribute to. Jacques Cavallier has used Patchouli very generously, and reworked it in Grasse to highlight the most noble and beautiful aspects of its scent. Bulgari ‘Malakeos’ pays tribute to a classical theme of masculine perfumery, Fougère, that the Perfumer has entirely revisited. In search of a powerful naturalness, an icy and nurturing green freshness, the fragrance resonates with the properties and the colours of malachite and captures the deep and aromatic greens of the forests of the Ural. The unique character of this creation in which Lavender and Oakmoss reign, with a very rare Bourbon Geranium, is resolutely modern on its base of Musk. Like the brush strokes of an artist, the herbs, the woods and the musk recall the palette of the multitude of shades of brilliant, masculine and sensual green of the Malachite.

Bulgari Ambero

The Vetiver root securely anchors ‘Ambero’ to the depths of the ear th and the shores of the Levant. Through spicy, rounded, unctuous and slightly ambery notes, the Perfumer presents a very different and contemporary interpretation of Vetiver with a warm, dense and voluptuous hear t which recalls that of Amber. It has a unique orientalism, to which Olibanum incense adds an extremely elegant character. Together it creates an ear thy, surprising and resolutely modern perfume.

Bulgari ‘Tygar’ is a fragrance with incomparable brightness and a very strong personality. Around an explosive Grapefruit, an accord of deep woods and Ambrox captures the duality and the exceptional energies of the Tiger’s Eye. The first impression and impact is surprising. The base is dense, but still contains light and energy. The creation of this Ambery Citrus – the most Italian of the collection and a perfume with a strong identity – was a tremendous challenge for Jacques Cavallier: a new and dazzling contrast between Grapefruit with its freshness and light and the darker and more ear thy amber note of Ambrox, in a dosage which is unique on the market. ‘Tygar’ evokes sparkling and sophisticated virility.

The Parisian fashion house Maison Martin Margiela was founded in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela. A cross-section between fashion and design, the house presents Haute Couture and ready-to-wear collections as well as leather goods, footwear, accessories, and fragrance. In 1994, Maison Martin Margiela introduced ‘REPLICA,’ a new seasonal line. The collection represents an interest in highly functional and emotive garments and accessories, meticulously reproduced to maintain the piece’s original character. Maison Martin Margiela expanded upon this concept with a collection of ‘REPLICA’ fragrances that evoke the scents hidden deep in our memories.

Perfumes have a tendency to remind you of certain moments or periods of your life, for example, I can put on a fragrance that takes me back to high school and your first love (Christian Dior Jules) or the times of endless desert nights in Jordan (Jil Sander Background). A good perfume is so much more than just a nice scent, it’s also connected to feelings and memories. Thats why I’ve always liked the thought of wearing a special fragrance during vacation (Bvlgari Eau the Vert, Hermès Eau de Hermès), so that I can relate to relaxation and well being when I’m wearing it. It’s possible I got kind of mesmerized by the words on the bottle but in this case they actually do make sense, even before the scent has becomed ‘yours’ you recognize it and I’m not kidding! ‘Reproduction of familiar scents and moments of varying locations and periods’ with a touch of ‘Sun kissed salty skin’ really spells out what this little bottle is all about and, well,  that’s more than enough for me.

Perfumers who were invited to participate in creation of the new collection are Jacques Cavallier and Marie Salamagne. Beach Walk opens with citruses – bergamot and lemon, and develops with pink pepper, ylang-ylang, coconut milk, musk and heliotrope to evoke a familiar but forgotten moment – a walk along a sandy beach
