Jaeger-LeCoultre 1931 Café

Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre presents 1931 Café, an elegant and convivial new venue created to coincide with 90 years of the Reverso, a watch that is considered an icon of Art Deco design. As a quintessential expression of Art Deco style, 1931 Café evokes the iconic aesthetic and design of the period, opening in Shanghai this week and travelling to Paris this autumn.

The 1931 Café will evoke the elegant interior of a 1930s ocean liner and the glamour of a film set. The design features a black-and-white palette combined with warm and flattering light. Several signature Art Deco elements have been incorporated in the design – chrome, velvet, glass and lacquered wood – and features a marble floor with an inlaid geometric pattern typical of the era.

Completing the design, a special collection of pastries has been created by French Pastry Chef Nina Métayer (photo below, wearing her Reverso), taking guests on a journey to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s home in the Vallée de Joux.

Opening from June 13 until August 15, the 1931 Café will be located at K11, the art and fashion hub in the centre of Shanghai. In the autumn, as 1931 Café, it will be recreated in a new location in the heart of Paris.

Marc Newsome and Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos 568 takes you back to the future

Australian designer Marc Newson has designed his third Atmos clock, powered by air and cased in handmade Baccarat crystal.

Celebrated watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre and industrial designer Marc Newsome have worked together several times before on Atmos clock models and have wowed us each time. The latest model in the Atmos series promises the same innovation and technical complexity as those that came before it. Jaeger-LeCoultre and Newsome have recently revealed the Atmos 568 clock which is actually housed in a Baccarat crystal cabinet.

The transparent crystal gives the clock a cool futuristic look and evokes a feeling of clean minimalism. The Atmos was originally created in 1928 and runs on the strength of a mix of gases hermetically sealed inside a capsule. The gases expand and contract with temperature changes in the room, their expansion swell the bellows of the accordion and power the clock. Even minute changes of a single degree are enough to keep the clock running for two days.

For the new 568 version, Newsome has redesigned most of the visible parts including the hands, dial, case and counterbalance.

When looked at through the front of the clock, the mechanism appears to float in midair, but a look through the back reveals the points at which it has been secured in place.

Bold blue numerals mark the indices and the month marker is part of the transparent dial. Moon phases are indicated on a white moon and blue sky at 6 o clock.

I asked myself: to what extent could I express myself within that object? And that, in fact, was the real challenge. … Despite the careful consideration for designing the interior elements, the “wow factor” of this clock is the Baccarat crystal case with its rounded cube shape. However the case was extremely complex to fabricate, there was an enormous amount of work and development required to perfect the shape.

Marc Newsome

The clock is a rounded cube, with the crystal at certain places being only 13mm thick to amplify that feeling of lightness and airiness.

While the previous Newson clocks were limited editions, the Atmos 568 is part of the regular collection.

Marc Newson reinterprets the Atmos clock by reworking its classical style while preserving all its essential features, allowing an icon of watchmaking to become an icon of style. Unveiling its secrets little by little, the Atmos 568 will intrigue the gaze of connoisseurs of beautiful objects.

The Atmos 568 by Marc Newson (ref. Q5165107) is available from both Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques and retailers starting December 2016, priced at $28,000. The clock features both brand names and promises to be a showstopper at the 2017 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie.

The Noses: Christine Nagel

A New Nose for Hermès

Hermès appointed its first in-house nose, Jean-Claude Ellena, a little over ten years ago. Now, as Ellena approaches his seventh decade, he’s preparing to hand over the reins to Christine Nagel, who developed blockbuster Narciso Rodriguez for Her (with Francis Kurkdjian), Jimmy Choo Flash and Guerlain’s Les Elixirs Charnels collection. It’s no ordinary handover. ‘Jean-Claude is giving it to me little by little’, says Nagel, it’s being what Ellena refers to as ‘the spirit of the house’.

Ellena personally chose Nagel as his apprentice, and she’ll take over in a few months or a few years, whenever the two of them decide that she’s ready. For now, she’s slowly and meticulously soaking up that aforementioned spirit. ‘She’s watching the person in charge of fashion, silk, jewelry, talking to all of the people who make Hermès, because the brand is its artists and craftsmen,” says Ellena. “She has to see everyone put a lot of energy and work into the details, the small details are so important.”

Not surprisingly, Nagel, who’s always wanted to be a nose, is a bit intimidated. ‘There’s so much freedom to take a risk, to have a strong opinion’, says Nagel. ‘It’s very exciting but also very dangerous!’ She does, however, have one leg up on her predecessor: She actually wears perfume and compares her own skin to ‘a playground’.

‘I have a creative preference for compositions characterised by simplicity, which mirrors their philosophy’. ‘Favourite’ notes go in cycles: ‘I’ve phases when I’m deeply into a single type: woody, oriental, green facets. It can turn almost into an obsession, until I have the feeling I’ve found what I’m looking for, and then I move on.’ And is it easier to create for women, or men? ‘Gender in perfume is an everlasting debate. In reality, anyone can wear whatever he or she likes, even if the fragrance is supposedly ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’. There’s no right or wrong…’

Gift ideas: watch straps

We would all love to shower our beloveds with generous Valentine’s day gifts but for those looking for a more modest way to mark the day, a new watch strap is the ideal gift. New watch straps in beautiful bright colours completely changes the look of a watch and the change of seasons is a good moment to refresh your watch with one of these straps in the latest colours.

I am always fiddling around with my watches, putting on new straps and my Reflet had so far a brown ostrich, a snow white lizard and dark brown croc strap. And every time I change the strap it looks like a brand new watch. Afterall would your beloved settle for just one handbag or only wear black shoes? I didn’t think so. Which is why a new watch strap will be a very welcome present this Valentine’s Day. Here is my selection of some fun colours to brighten up a chilly Valentine’s Day from Boucheron, Hermès and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Most of them cost between €130 to €250 which is an awful lot cheaper than a new watch.
