The Noses

We all have a nose.  But some ‘noses’ are very special indeed: that’s industry-speak for perfumer. In reality, being a ‘nose’ is a challenging job that takes up to seven years of study – and (mostly) qualifications in Chemistry…

I’m always fascinated by noses.  And by the ‘Creative Directors’ and ‘evaluators’ who work in this field, too: almost ‘go-betweens’ between brands and fashion designers, and those noses, a little-known, but most important role.

These men and (increasingly) women, have the talent and skills to whisk us through time and space – bringing back memories of people and places we’ve known and loved.  Through their artistry, we can feel more romantic, more powerful, more beautiful, more creative…

I believe their talents should be recognised and celebrated – just as composers, artists and (more recently) chefs are acknowledged for their gifts, and the enormous pleasure they bring us.  Until lately, almost all perfumers worked behind the scenes, anonymously.  Now, noses are emerging from their laboratories, starting to talk about their creations, and what goes into them….

Introducing Hermès Hermessence Cuir d’Ange, a ‘leather inspired’ fragrance by Hermès

Hermès Cuir d'Ange 1.jpg

Translating literally as ‘angel leather’ – Hermès launches its latest scent, the first in over a year, for the ‘his and hers’ Hermessence line

Hermès has launched an exciting new scent under its Hermessence range, Cuir d’Ange, the twelfth fragrance in the unisex line. The last in the series was Épice Marine, which premiered back in 2013. The Hermessence collection comprises 12 perfumes created for both men and women: Rose Ikebana, Osmanthe Yunnan, Iris Ukiyoé, Vanille Galante, Brin de Réglisse, Épice Marine, Vétiver Tonka, Santal Massoïa, Poivre Samarcande, Paprika Brasil, Ambre Narguilé and now Cuir d’Ange.

Hermès Cuir d'Ange 5

Cuir d’Ange was developed by house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena and inspired by the delicate leathers in the Hermès workshops. Ellena also labelled the soft leather notes used for the brand’s Kelly Calèche scent as ‘Cuir d’Ange’ – angel leather, after a phrase from Jean Giono’s novel Jean le Bleu. This re-invention of the concept also includes notes of heliotrope, hawthorn, violet, narcissus and musk.

Hermès Cuir d’Ange is available now in 100 ml Eau de Toilette. Cuir d’Ange and the other fragrances from the Hermessence collection are available exclusively at Hermès stores worldwide.

Hermès collaborating with Wissam Shawkat for a new bespoke perfume

Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles by Wisam Shawkat visual1.jpg

Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles is a beautiful feminine perfume and was created by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, while the bottle was designed by Serge Mansau

With L’Elixir, I wanted a tantalizing, mouth-watering composition. With L’Eau Claire, I was looking for clarity, transparency and lightness. With Ambre, the woman becomes sensual and mysterious. For this new chapter, I wanted to relate one of the mysteries of amber, hovering between a delicious treat and sensuality, where vanilla meets the warmth of labdanum, and the moist quality of patchouli.

Jean-Claude Ellena

Reinventing its classic scent L’Ambre des Merveilles, Hermès has unveiled its new fragrance for the GCC, partners with Wissam Shawkat and his incredible calligraphy skills.

Available from September 15, exclusively in all Hermès boutiques around the GCC, the famed French Maison teamed up with Wissam Shawkat to create a unique Arabic type for the special edition L’Ambre des Merveilles bottle.

The story of L’Eau des Merveilles is a poetic tale inspired by the way the house of Hermès looks at the world, as Jean-Claude Ellena, the in-House perfumer of Hermès, created a magical scent developed from the original woody, amber theme.

Hermès Terre d’Hermès Eau Tres Fraiche

Terre D´Hermès Eau Tres Fraîche by Hermès Banner.png

French Maison Hermès launches a new elegant perfume Terre d’Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche. Hermès Terre d’Hermés Eau Tres Fraiche is the fresher flanker to Terre d’Hermès released in 2006.

Feeling the earth, lying on the ground, gazing at the sky.

Jean-Claude Ellena

Created by famous in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès Terre d’Hermès Eau Tres Fraiche blends the same citrusy notes as in the original perfume, yet updated with warm wood – that makes this perfume smell fresher, lighter and watery. In true Jean-Claude Ellena style, the opening of Eau Très Fraîche is an ode to laboratory-created photorealistic fruit with remarkable presence and fullness.

Here, the acerbic note of grapefruit presents itself in a pleasing wave of sulphuric citrus full of bitterness and supported by a tangy blast of fruity zing. Pepper accents this multi-faceted grapefruit note perfectly, creating a spicy and almost sweaty undertone that one wishes could last forever.

A soothing and sensory freshness finds its strength in the icy cold of aldehydes, the acerbity of bitter orange and the warmth of wood.

It’s at this point that the fragrance is most unlike Terre d’Hermès, its forbearer, and it could almost stand alone as an addition to Hermès’ wonderful range of colognes.

The new perfume comes in a simple crystal bottle, yet inspiring an irresistible masculine, elegant and fresh aroma ideal for everyday use.

Hermès Terre d’Hermès Eau Tres Fraiche will be available later this month as 75ml and 125ml Eau de Toilette.

Hermès Hermessence Santal Massoïa

Hermes logo

Maison Hermès fills up his Hermessence Collection with one more unisex and truly exhilarating perfume. Santal Massoïa along with other nine fragrances Ambre Narguile (2004), Vetiver Tonka (2004), Poivre Samarcande (2004), Rose Ikebana (2004), Osmanthe Yunnan (2005), Paprika Brasil (2006), Brin de Regliss (2007), Vanille Galante (2009) and Iris Ukiyoé (2010) make up the collection that needs no words to be described thanks’ to their elegant and sophisticated smell and look.

There are linear, vertical woods like cedar, and others that are horizontal, round, supple and velvet-smooth, such as sandalwood and massoia. With this understanding in mind, I composed this enigmatic, inviting yet distant perfume of milky woods, with its unusual, pungent hints of resin and dried fruit, and familiar smells of dulce de leche and flowers.

Jean-Claude Ellena

Hermès in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena has created the whole collection that resonates with desire and charm. Hermès Hermessence Santal Massoïa is inspired by the Massoïa tree that resembles the coconut smell, along with sandalwood, rich milk and dried fruity accords. Santal Massoïa will become women’s exotic source of imagination. Its finest aroma, natural oils and coconut character will invite you to try it.

Santal Massoia is a woody perfume that is essentially linear in its development. It is smooth, perfectly refined and – for lack of a better word – utterly pleasant. Slowly sandalwood becomes apparent and with it a creamy, milky diffuse sweetness, sometimes hinting at coconut, sometime like caramel.

Top notes: Green fig, resin, dried fruit
Heart: Massoïa bark, coconut, caramel, floral notes,
Base: Sandelwood, vertiver

But while all that sounds heavy and like a gourmand festival, this perfume is certainly not that. Throughout, there is a shimmering, nebulous quality, like strolling through a bare forest in the morning mist.

Hermès Hermessence Santal Massoïa Perfume will be available in 100ml Eau de Toilette for €170 while the bottle wrapped in a luxurious and expensive lather package will cost €410.

Hermès Voyage d’Hermès

Voyage d'Hermès

It all begins with a voyage. Hermès Voyage d’Hermès takes perfume lovers on a peaceful, calm and fantastic voyage. This woody, lively, radiant and fresh fragrance perfectly fits both men and women.

The story of Hermès is a voyage. Voyage d’Hermès is lively and reassuring, new and familiar. Radiant and soft, it is a woody fresh, musky scent. A fragrance to share for both men and women.

Maison Hermès introduced its effervescent fragrance in 2010. Voyage d’Hermès is one of those fresh perfumes that you want always to breathe and to breathe. Even though at first glance it doesn’t remind you of any voyages, it will awaken memories of lovely places while melting on skin.

Created by in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès Voyage d’Hermès opens with citrusy notes of grapefruit, lime and mango. Perfume calms with black pepper, ginger, green tea and rose accords. On skin your Voyage d’Hermès becomes woodier and muskier as it ends in the note of cardamom.

Hermès Voyage d'Hermès EDT bottle box

Hermès Voyage d’Hermès is sealed in a glass bottle with a flexible metallic top. It has a very stylish and modern look. Voyage d’Hermès charms and captivates men and women’s heart with its alluring commercial ad, thanks to the horse and dove that symbolize power and purity. Voyage d’Hermès by Hermès looks priceless even in times to come.

The film Voyage d’Hermès Pure Perfume is the rewritten story of Pegasus, the winged horse from Greek mythology. The encounter between the horse and the bird signs the departure to a new elsewhere. This singular and symbolic adventure features Voyage d’Hermès Pure Perfume which is an amplified echo on the ‘woody fresh musk’ theme of the original fragrance with a new amber intensity.

The fragrance is available as 35 ml, 100 ml and 125 ml Eau de Toilette. Spread away your wings and continue to fly to wonderlands with Hermès Voyage d’Hermès perfume…

Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles

Hermes Eau Claire des Merveilles ad.jpg

Perfume has been a part of the brand’s history since the 1930s. In the library of Maison Hermès perfumes, every creation tells a story, opens up an imaginary world. Hermès demonstrates through its perfumes the excellence of its craftsmanship, its artistry, and its creative freedom.

Luxurious! Now Maison Hermès launched Eau Claire des Merveilles as a fresh and lively perfume that resembles the magic water. Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles is a very delightful and pleasant fragrance for modern women. Eau Claire des Merveilles was created by famous perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena and he described this scent as soft, delicate, pure and sensual.

Top: Citrus, Aldehydes
Heart: Floral notes, Spices
Bottom: Vanilla, Powder, Driftwood

Created by Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles blends an incandescent variety of soft vanilla, warm amber and exotic woods. Perfume also features flowery notes, airy notes and powdery notes. Exotic and fresh may be a contradiction, but not in the case of this perfume. It has woody and warm amber notes mixed with such notes as powder, soft vanilla, airy notes, as well as a veil of floral notes. You put it on and you immediately tell yourself: ‘Today will be all good’.
